Real squids communicate using their chromatophores in their skin to change colours and give messages via colour patterns. It is possible, but these colors are not seen for cultural reasons. Why do we never see Red, White, or Black Ink in the game? Is it possible? The Inkling’s gear is quickly teleported afterwards. As the Inkling’s body teleports, the enemy ink that was attached to them is flung out everywhere, making a puddle. An Inkling’s ability to breathe is threatened by enemy ink or when falling into water (and Inkling’s cannot swim in or breathe water), so in these instances the Inkling is teleported. If the Inkling is covered in too much enemy ink, their ability to breath is endangered, and the checkpoint teleports the Inkling back to safety. The checkpoint detects whether or not an Inkling’s ability to breath is threatened. However, Inklings do not suffocate and die from enemy ink, they ‘splat’ instead. This is why Inklings take damage from ink. Considering real squid ink can choke foes, Inkling ink may do the same, choking Inklings when they are covered in enemy ink. Inklings also slowly take damage when standing in enemy ink, and are also slowed down a lot. The more ink that hits them, the more ink covers them. Now looking at how ink functions in Splatoon, when enemy ink hits them, the ink clings to them and sticks to them. Squid ink is often very viscous and sticky, therefore if a predator where to swim through a squid’s ink cloud, it could clog up the predator’s gills and choke them to some extent. Looking at real squid ink, squids use ink as a decoy or smokescreen when frightened. How does ink work? Why do Inklings splat? To be clear as far as language is concerned, any Inkling that is over 14 is legally an adult, and is referred to as a “Kid.” Any Inkling who is younger is referred to as a “Squid.” So “Kid” means “adult” to Inklings, and “Squid” means “child” or “baby” to Inklings. The doors look suited for a humanoid about a head taller than the playable Inklings, which gives further evidence for this being their size. Also, on Flounder Heights, there are apartments and doors made for Inklings. However, if he were to stand up straight he would be about a head taller than the young inklings, about 3’5’’. The only example is Cap’n Cuttlefish, who is hunched over, being very old (at least 114 years). Fully grown inklings are rarely seen in the game. Compared to him, a young kid Inkling is about 50% taller, therefore the young playable inklings are about 2’3’’ give or take. In this image he can be safely estimated to be about 1’6’’ feet tall, give or take an inch or two. In the sunken scrolls we see Judd being held by his original owner, a human male. This does not mean that Inklings are heavy though, just that they are heavy for their size. The ink sac of inklings increases their overall body density to be greater than water, hence Inklings sink when they fall into the water. Anything more dense than water will sink. If a lot of mass is compressed into a small space, that area becomes dense. The Ink sac is described to be highly concentrated. They have no bones, a brain, likely three hearts, lungs, a digestive system, and an ink sac. Inklings can change color using chromatophores in their skin, like real squids.Īccording to the sunken scrolls, Inklings have organs inside their body. Inklings can blend in with their own ink very well when swimming in it, just as real squids use their ink as a smokescreen to hide themselves. Hence why Inklings can fit through grating and in between bars and fences. Like real squids, any opening that Inklings are able to fit their beak into, they can fit their entire body into. The only solid part of the Inkling’s body is their beak (teeth). Hence why the Inkling’s squid-form has such a large head compared to the kid-form. When they transform, the fluid in their limbs moves up and into their head, causing their limbs to shrivel up into four of the small tentacles we see on a squid-form. The pressurized fluid makes their limbs rigid. Inklings stand by using a system of fluid-filled bladders, possibly blood, ink, or another fluid. The sunken scrolls say that Inklings have no bones, but they do have organs, meaning they are flesh and blood. Some people theorize that Inklings are entirely made of Ink.
